Quality control

Concrete cube testing results, right next to their delivery note

When concrete cube testing, whether on cubes or cylinders, returns a low result, the first thing to know is what was loaded into that truck. Gesthorm keeps concrete quality control on the delivery note itself: you record crushing-test quality controls and see their results next to the raw materials that were used.

Why it's hard to follow up concrete cube testing

The Código Estructural (Spain's structural code, Real Decreto 470/2021, de 29 de junio; BOE-A-2021-13681) sets out how concrete compressive strength is checked on receipt: the sample is taken according to UNE-EN 12350-1, with its record, and the test specimens are crushed in compression at 28 days according to UNE-EN 12390-3, at least two for each determination.

In other words, the result arrives almost a month after the truck left the plant. By then the delivery note has already been invoiced and nobody remembers which raw materials went into that load. If crushing results are noted in a separate spreadsheet, matching each result to its delivery note is manual work every time.

And that's exactly what you need when a crushing result comes back low: to know what was produced, with which mix design and with which raw materials.

Customer delivery note in Gesthorm: plant, series, customer, site, vehicle, driver, item, quantity produced and raw material consumption
A customer delivery note with its raw material consumption, exactly as Gesthorm imports it from the batching controller.

Concrete quality control, on the delivery note itself

  • The delivery note arrives on its own. Gesthorm collects from the batching controller each outgoing delivery note with the raw materials used to produce it, thanks to the connection with the loading software.
  • You record the crushing test on that delivery note. Gesthorm includes records of crushing-test quality controls: tracking of the controls carried out on each delivery note.
  • You see the result in context. The application shows the results of those controls automatically, together with the raw materials used in production.

What you have to hand when a crushing result comes back low

With the delivery note, its crushing test and its load in the same place, the conversation with the site starts with data:

  • The customer, site, vehicle and driver for the load, which come on the delivery note.
  • The mix design and its raw material composition, because Gesthorm stores every mix design with what goes into it.
  • What that load actually consumed, which arrives from the batching controller with the delivery note.
  • The other loads of the same mix design over a period, with a custom report you can export to Excel.

How quality control and concrete testing work in Gesthorm

From the day of the load to the crushing result:

The plant loads

The batching controller creates the delivery note and Gesthorm receives it with its consumption.

Test specimens are taken

At the point of discharge, as the Código Estructural requires.

The crushing test is recorded

The control result is recorded against that delivery note.

You check it whenever you like

With the delivery note, the mix design and the raw materials used.

Learn more about test specimens and crushing tests

If you want to go over how samples are taken, how to read a crushing result and what to check when it comes back low, it's all explained on the blog: Concrete quality control: test specimens and crushing tests (in Spanish).

Quality also depends on what comes into the plant: with the mass balance you reconcile raw material deliveries with what each delivery note consumes, and with the cost per cubic metre you know what each mix design costs you.

Does Gesthorm record crushing tests on concrete test specimens?

Yes. It includes records of crushing-test quality controls, and those controls are tracked against the outgoing delivery notes.

Where can I see the result of each quality control?

On the delivery note: Gesthorm shows the control results automatically, together with the raw materials used in production.

Do I have to type in the delivery notes to record crushing tests?

No. Outgoing delivery notes arrive on their own from the batching controller, with their raw material consumption.

Can I list all the loads of a mix design?

Yes. With custom reports you choose fields, filters, sort order and totals, and export it to Excel.

Does Gesthorm replace the testing laboratory?

No. The tests are carried out by the laboratory; Gesthorm helps you keep each result together with its delivery note and its mix design.
